The Bay of Islands, one of New Zealand 's most scenic areas now has a golf course of world class. Without doubt one of the most spectacular and superbly designed golf courses in the world to come up in the last 20years.

American owner Julian Robertson commissioned David Harman of Golf Course Consultants Florida to design and build the course. Harman, who has worked on more than 200 courses world wide with the Arnold Palmer's design company, has done a brilliant job. Set on 4000 acres of rolling coastal farmland near Matauri Bay, Northland, Kauri Cliffs was constructed to harmonise and blend with the natural features of the land.

Six holes are played alongside cliffs, which plunge into the sea. Altogether there are fifteen holes with views of the Pacific Ocean that span from the Cavalli Islands south to Cape Brett. The blend of holes that form the inland transition in the course are equally dramatic. The par 72 championship course measures 6510 metres / 7119 yards from the championship tees, although there are five sets of tees to challenge all skill levels.

Enormous international accolades include Kauri Cliffs being named the "Best New International Golf Course of 2001" by US Golf Digest and being rated no. 49 in the world by US Golf Magazine in 2003.

The golf complex includes a world class practice range, putting and chipping greens, a well stocked golf shop and lady's and men's locker rooms.

Exclusive luxury appointed chalets are available with service and meal inclusions of the highest standard.

Float Plane - Kauri Cliffs to Huka Lodge

Since the first week of October 2004, Volcanic Air Safaris is the proud owner of a large float plane called DHC-3 Otter. The Otter has a very interesting history, as it was built in 1954 and served the Canadian Air Force for many years. The Otter served with a rescue unit in Nova Scotia first and was later shipped to Egypt as part of the United Nations duties to supervise the ceasefire between Israel and Egypt after the Suez crisis. In 1975, the Otter was transferred to the Province of Ontario to fly for the Ministry of Natural Resources. It flew government personnel to remote areas and was used for rescue work, fire fighting and cargo carrying. An American company bought the Otter in 1986 and from then on, the floatplane became a tourist carrier. Not long after, it was purchased by an Alaskan company who used the Otter for commuter type services. A few years later, The Otter made its way back to Canada and in 2004 it was shipped to New Zealand. Volcanic Air Safaris uses this extraordinary plane, seating 9 passengers, for our standard brochure flights as well as charters to suitable water destinations and waterfront properties

In 1931 a devastating earthquake nearly levelled the city of Napier. It was rebuilt in the style of the times, and is now considered the Art Deco Capital of the world. The vineyards of Hawkes Bay are all within easy reach of Napier. Another attraction is the gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers.

The major entertainment on the road from Taupo to Napier is the fantastic scenery. Theres a bit of everything - rugged hills, beautiful valleys, gentle plains and huge vistas. At Tarawera you can walk to the hot springs, which are above the Waipunga River. You might also want to stop at the Waiarua Falls lookout, to view the twin waterfalls.

Taupo to Napier

A Feast of Art Deco Architecture

Napier was rebuilt in the early 1930s following a massive Richter 7.9 earthquake. Subsequent fires destroyed most of its commercial heart. By the end of the decade, Napier was the newest city on the globe. Nowhere else can you see such a variety of buildings in the styles of the 1930s - Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission and Art Deco - in such a concentrated area. And Napier''s Art Deco is unique, with Maori motifs and the buildings of Louis Hay, admirer of the great Frank Lloyd Wright.

We are pleased to announce that Kauri Cliffs sister lodge will be opening in November 2007. Located on the North Island in Hawkes Bay, one of New Zealands most important wine districts, Cape Kidnappers has a rich history beginning with its discovery by

Captain James Cook in 1769.

The new lodge, or The Farm as it is called, promises to be a five star experience. Cape Kidnappers is set on a 6,000 acre sheep and cattle farm which encompasses land reminiscent of Montana but plunges

800 feet straight into the sea.

On the exterior, the lodge will resemble a cluster of farm buildings. Local materials are incorporated into graciously scaled rooms full of natural light and unexpected treasures. Comfort and ease are at a premium with each room taking on a character of its own while harkening back to the rural feeling of the New Zealand sheep station and wine country. Spacious cottages, each with breathtaking views, open to large porches overlooking a stunning Pacific panorama. The cottages feature calm colors and materials that suggest a traditional rural farm yet contain all of the modern amenities one could wish for.

Inclusions: Accommodation, pre dinner drinks, dinner and breakfast, complimentary mini-bar including domestic beers (excludes liquor and wine), and use of all lodge facilities excluding golf.

CAPE KIDNAPPERS

by Tom Doak

Our goal in designing golf courses is to create interesting holes you wouldn't find anywhere else. That wasn't hard to do at Cape Kidnappers, because the site is not like anywhere else in golf. If it were any bigger or any more dramatic, it would probably be cordoned off as a national park. It's an overwhelming experience to stand up on the cliffs, 140 meters above sea level, and look out across the waves far below in Hawke's Bay.

Cape Kidnappers is not true links terrain, with the wrinkles of sand dunes; instead the land tilts toward the sea as a series of ridges jutting out toward the edge of the cliffs. Yet, the play is seaside golf at its finest. The surface is firm and fast, the conditions can be windy, and the player who can control his trajectory will be master of the course. You'll hit shots over the tops of the tea trees, and play along the edges of deep ravines. If you stray on your approaches, you'll actually hope to get caught up in bunkers hanging off the green's edge, some of them deeper than you've ever seen before. At the twelfth and fifteenth you'll play right out to land's end, to greens as Bernard Darwin once described the 17th at North Berwick in Scotland:

"Then comes the crucial shot, the approach on to [a] green that slopes right away from us to the sea -- without the ghost of a charitable back wall. It is so frightening that we are strongly tempted to approach it on the instalment system, and it is really wonderful how many instalments may be necessary, as with limbs palsied with terror, we push and poke the ball over that treacherous and slippery surface."

Gratuity for the caddies (NZD$20 - $35) will be paid by the guests directly to the caddie.

Inclusions: Green Fees, Electric Cart, Caddie

Highlights and Wine Tour

Days of indulgence and Art Deco

For travellers, Hawkes Bay Wine Country presents an eclectic mix of visual and sensual experiences. The region is New Zealands leading producer of red wines, has the greatest concentration of Art Deco architecture and hosts the countrys most elaborate celebrations of Matariki the Maori New Year. As if that werent enough, Hawkes Bay is also known for its artisan gourmet foods and glorious beaches that stretch from Mahia Peninsula in the north to Porangahau in the south.

The landscapes of Hawkes Bay begin with the high, forested Ruahine and Kaweka Ranges. From the mountains, the land steps down towards the coast, flattening out to become the Heretaunga Plains. A number of wide rivers run swiftly to meet the blue Pacific Ocean. The twin cities of Napier and Hastings are the main population centres.

Blessed with a sunny, Mediterranean-style climate, Hawkes Bay is one of New Zealands warmest, driest regions.

Measuring 6,412 metres (7,013 yards) from the back tees the design emphasises the natural features of the site, each hole having its own particular identity in terms of both strategy and landscape setting. Queenstown Full Day - Glenorchy - Dart River - Wakatipu Valley

Queenstown was named because ...it was fit for Queen Victoria. Certainly it's lived up to that expectation. Today it's an exhilarating alpine resort, perfect for both adventurers and leisure seekers.

There are year-round action-packed thrills, such as jet boating, white water rafting and parapenting. Queenstown is also the world capital and home of bungy jumping. In winter, Queenstown turns into an alpine playground - skiers and snowboarders come from all over the world to join in the fun at the annual Winter Festival. On Lake Wakatipu, the vintage TSS Earnslaw steamer has been beautifully restored to its original condition and takes visitors on daily trips.

Keen golfers shouldn't miss out on an opportunity to play some of the most scenic courses in the world, at award-winning Millbrook Resort, Kelvin Heights, Arrowtown and Frankton. The area has great rainbow trout, brown trout and quinnat salmon fishing.

Wine tasting is fast becoming one of the more popular ways to see the greater Queenstown region. Join one of the wine tours to Gibbston Valley, Chard Farm or Peregrine Winery among a number of top class boutique wineries.

Don't miss historical Arrowtown with its quaint, tree-lined streets, miners' cottages and shops preserved as they were during the 19th century gold rush era, just a 20 minute drive away.
