An extraordinary wilderness experience on the coastal flood plains of the Mary River delta in the Top End of Australia’s Northern Territory. Situated just west of Kakadu National Park, Bamurru Plains is an utterly exclusive bush camp that exudes Wild Bush Luxury, bringing a touch of style to a remote and beautiful wilderness region.

Wild Bush Luxury - A style of accommodation more akin to some of the safari camps in Africa, Bamurru Plains attraction lies in the birdlife and wildlife of the surrounding floodplains and savannah woodland. However, we realize that while an exclusive bush experience does not need to be 5 star in the traditional sense, there are key elements that are crucial to a truly exclusive stay in the bush: a supremely comfortable bed and quality linen, great bathrooms, good food & wine and excellent guiding. The style of experience is utterly exclusive, rustically chic and totally in tune with the surrounding country.

Inclusions: Airstrip transfers, all meals, drinks from the bar. Activities included are an airboat safari, guided walking, boating on the Sampan River and guided wildlife drives.

Bamurru Plains

The floodplains of the Top End provide some of Australia's best natural experiences with an extraordinary diversity and volume of birdlife, reptiles and wildlife. The wetlands and rivers host one of the largest crocodile populations in the Northern Territory, while the savannah bush is home to thousands of wallabies, dingoes and other mammals.

The stone country of Arnhem Land and Kakadu is a short distance away providing an insight to the regions Aboriginal heritage, which remains amongst the strongest in Australia. In conjunction with this the buffalo ranching leases on the floodplains hark back to the era of the early European explorers, settlers and hunters in this area.

Tour starts
Bamurru Plains
01 Sep 8am

During your stay at Bamurru Plains your hosts will plan your daily activities to suit your interests and your mood. Included activities are an airboat safari, guided walking, boating on the Sampan River and guided wildlife drives. This area is known for its wildlife and wallabies, dingoes, brumbies, buffalo, goannas all make regular appearances, however it is the prolific birdlife that makes this area a unique nature attraction.

A typical day at Bamurru may begin with an early morning coffee and muffin being delivered to your room as the sun rises. Climb aboard the airboats for an excursion across the flood plains, spotting crocodiles and startling the Magpie Geese into flight. In the shade of the paperbark trees, in the lily ponds, stop for a quiet morning tea and return to camp as the sun heats the day. Now there is time for a siesta, a swim, to read a book or quiz your guide for more information on this remarkable place. Lunch is followed by an afternoon activity, perhaps a guided walk or a gentle cruise down the Sampan River. Return to the camp in the evening, in time for a shower and dinner with your fellow travellers.

Small Group Touring
Tour starts
Bamurru Plains
02 Sep 8am

Transfer to the Airstrip early in the morning; board your charter flight to Jabiru in Kakadu National Park for a full day SMALL GROUP TOUR of Arnhem Land and Kakadu.

Access to Arnhem Land is restricted to a select group of guides they know the people and the country intimately. Arnhem Land is perhaps the one area in Australia where indigenous culture is still dominant, despite a long history of interacting with other cultures. While in Arnhem Land an Aboriginal guide will show you excellent examples of rock art on Injalak Hill (Long Tom Dreaming), this area has some of the best rock art examples in Western Arnhem Land and some say Australia.

The view from the top of the hill is simply breathtaking, looking out across the floodplains and around the escarpment. Back at the Injalak Art & Craft Centre there is an opportunity to browse or purchase goods from this non-profit Aboriginal organization and to watch the traditional Aboriginal people painting and the women weaving pandanus baskets. In the afternoon explore a remote valley - stunning scenery, billabongs, birds, the escarpment and a place to imagine the life of the Aboriginal people who have been at home here for 50,000 years or more. Lunch and entrance fees as well as guide services are included.

In the late afternoon you will be returned to Bamurru Plains by charter flight.

Arnhem Land and Kakadu

Arnhem Land is vast, covering 91,000 square kilometres.

Arnhem Land is located in the middle of Australia's northern coast and bounded by Kakadu National Park, the Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria.

This Aboriginal-owned expanse is made up of wild coastlines, deserted islands, rivers teeming with fish, lush rainforests, soaring escarpments and savannah woodland.

This land is one of the last great unspoiled areas of the world. Its small population is predominantly indigenous, whose traditional Aboriginal culture remains largely intact. The didjeridu originated in Arnhem Land, and the area is also world-renowned for its distinctive, authentic Aboriginal art.

Arnhem Land is one of the best fishing destinations in the world, mainly owing to its seldom-fished waters. You can go bluewater fishing for marlin off the secluded coastline or cruise inland on a tidal estuary in search of massive barramundi. Afterwards, relax with a drink on the deck of an exclusive fishing lodge and watch the changing colours of the sunset.

Arnhem Land is real adventure territory. Many travellers fly in or visit Arnhem Land on a four-wheel drive tour, but to really test your driving skills, obtain a permit and experience the networks of four-wheel drive tracks yourself (April to September only). You can then sleep under the stars at one of Arnhem Land’s many secluded camp spots.

Bungle Bungle & Lake Argyle Scenic flight

The Bungle Bungle range in the World Heritage Listed Purnululu National Park is one of Western Australia's most fascinating landmarks and the ultimate place for outback adventure. The area in the East Kimberley region also has great Indigenous cultural significance which dates back 20,000 years. From the air, the Bungle Bungle range is an awesome site, rising 300 metres out of the plain. The orange and black stripes of these massive sandstone structures are easy to spot from a scenic flight.

Massive Lake Argyle is one of the most spectacular attractions in Western Australia offering boat cruising, fishing and an abundance of native animals and birds. Lake Argyle is the biggest man made lake in Australia. It's several times larger than Sydney Harbour and holds up to 32 million cubic metres of water. Created by the Ord River dam, it's so huge that it's classified as an inland sea. One of the best ways to appreciate its grandeur is to take to the air for a scenic flight - you can even go by float plane and land on the lake.

Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef

Stretching 280 kms along Western Australia's harsh and arid coast, the Ningaloo Reef is an extraordinary yet strangely unknown jewel in Australia's natural heritage. Hidden in the dunes overlooking pristine beaches and coral reefs, Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef is an exclusive bush camp that exudes 'Wild Bush Luxury' and brings a touch of style to a remote region.

Accommodation is in five free standing, spacious tents on raised platforms. Each has an en suite bathroom with a natureloo (marketing jargon for state of the art composting loos!) and a solar hot water shower. Designed to blend with the dunes and low lying coastal scrub, the tents have overhead fans and comfortable beds with fabulous views of the Indian Ocean.

The social heart of the camp is raised above the sand and coastal scrub and it too has views of the reef and the breakers beyond. A bar and open lounge area with a small reference library provides a great spot to sit out the heat of day.

In the cool of the evening kangaroos and wallaroos appear from the bush for their evening graze. Guests may help themselves to a selection of beverages from the open bar and perhaps watch the resident chef as he prepares contemporary Australian cuisine with hints of native produce. Dinner is shared with other guests, your guides and hosts against a back-drop of rich orange sunsets.

The coastal reef and inshore waters of Ningaloo Reef provide one of Australia’s great marine experiences, while the limestone back-drop of the Cape Range hides deep gorges of spectacular beauty. The coral reef is literally on your doorstep and our guides are passionate and knowledgeable people who love showing you their backyard – over 500 species of fish, 250 coral species and 600 species of mollusc. Ningaloo is known as one of the best places on earth to see and swim with Whale Sharks and Manta Rays. It is also a major breeding area for Hawksbill, Green and Loggerhead Turtles, which are seen daily in front of the camp.

Our aim is to inspire and provoke thought in the activities we deliver and to increase awareness of the dangers that may impact on this wildly beautiful and pristine place.

Activities included in your stay are guided sea kayaking and snorkelling trips on the Reef, wildlife viewing and guided gorge walks in the Cape Range National Park as well as a boat trip on nearby Yardie Creek. At additional cost the camp can arrange fishing charters, whale shark swims (in season from April to July) and reef excursions for more snorkelling and diving. These boat trips will all depart from Exmouth Marina.

Sea Kayaking - Kayaks are the perfect vessel for exploring the reef with minimal interference to the ecosystem. The Blue Lagoon is a 5m deep natural aquarium where huge schools of fish, reef sharks and turtles swim among the coral formations.

Snorkelling - A drift snorkel just a few metres offshore reveals a wealth of life, with huge staghorn coral formations, anemones, Clownfish, rays and sponge gardens. All snorkelling gear is provided.

Wildlife Viewing - Red Kangaroos, wallaroos, rock wallabies and Goulds Goannas are resident in the park while the birdlife includes Pied Butcherbirds, Fairy Wrens, Kestrels, Zebra Finches, Reef Herons, waders, seabirds and the occasional Emu that strolls through camp.

Guided Gorge Walks - Two kms behind the camp, a walk up Mandu Mandu gorge is a step back in geological history with fossil bearing limestone formations and spectacular views back to the coast. The history of 30,000 years of human habitation in this area is slowly unfolding from studies of artefacts, middens and rock shelters.

Fishing (additional cost) - A short distance from the camp and outside the National park, the coastal shallows provide the best place in Australia for bone fishing. Deep sea bottom fishing charters are also available in Exmouth.

Whale Shark charters (additional cost) - April to June is the season to swim with the Whale Sharks as they migrate through these waters. We will be happy to arrange for you to join a Whale Shark tour with one of the Exmouth operators.

Yardie Creek - Take a guided cruise or walk through this spectacular multi-coloured gorge in search of Black-footed Rock Wallabies. Yardie is the only gorge in the area with permanent water and its mangrove areas provide roosting sites for many bird species while the sheltered waters are a sanctuary for marine animals.

Star Gazing - Lie back on the beach and gaze at the Milky Way stretching from one horizon to the other.
